ABOUT POLGOOTH METHODIST CHURCH

The old miners would be amazed to find that the engine house of Great Polgooth mine was now surrounded by St Austell golf course and incorporated into the badge of the club. Mining and smelting was carried out here before 1700 and when John Taylor took over in 1820 there were no less than seven engines working here, winding, pumping and stamping. John Taylor was also associated with Charlestown United and Crinnis mines. Much of the area being riddled with old workings, as is the case in all the mining areas of Cornwall.

Not far away was South Polgooth mine where arsenic (always associated with tin ore) was still being produced in 1916.
